The Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark has been recognized by UNESCO on September 5, 2013; from November 17, 2015, it has been recognized as a UNESCO site and included in the list of the UNESCO Global Geoparks which are UNESCO’s new priority program, joining World Heritage of Humanity, Biosphere Reserves and Intangible Heritage.
The UNESCO Global Geopark designation was ratified by the 195 member states during the 38th UNESCO General Conference. In 2017, after four years, the geopark had its first revalidation, which confirmed the status of "UNESCO Global Geopark" for a further four years.
The geopark is managed by the Val Grande National Park and the Sesia Val Grande Geopark Association to which, from 2016, has been added the managing body of the protected areas of the Sesia Valley. The scientific coordination is overseen by the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Turin.
